Carnlough Harbour

Carnlough Harbour

Carnlough Harbour at dawn after a stormy night

The coastal village of Carnlough prospered through the excavation and export of the limestone from the hills behind the village. The lime was transported from the hills to the harbour via a bogey line, which passed over a bridge spanning the coastal road, to reach the harbour where it was loaded onto ships for transport to England. The limestone that was the village’s fortune can be seen in the fabric of the harbour itself.

There is a pleasant walk from the town along the old bogey line to the old lime quarries and an impressive waterfall.
