Ballycopeland Windmill
In these days of environmental awareness wind-power is rather fashionable, but in the 19th century there were more than 100 windmills in County Down. The stumps of these can be seen dotted around the countryside and some have even been converted into dwellings. Ballycopeland Windmill is unique in that it is the only remaining fully working windmill in the county. Although it still in working order it hasn’t been used to mill corn since 1915, by which time it had probably been in use for well over 100 years – so not only was wind-power popular, but they also built things to last and repaired them rather than making them to break and replacing them.
