Happisburgh Cliff Erosion

Happisburgh Cliff Erosion

This image is appearing in the CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year exhibition from 17th September until 11th October 2008 at The Art Pavilion, Mile End Park, East London.

It is also the most visited image on my website from Google searches. So far only two people have contacted me about it. One person who wanted to use it for a university project and an amateur painter who copied it for use in a competition (she won the category). If anyone reads this and wants to tell me why so many people are visiting via Google, I’d be very interested to know!

The image is from Happisburgh in Norfolk. The debris you can see in the foreground is the remains of the coastal defences that were constructed to protect the coast from the relentless bashing from the North Sea. The house perched on top of the cliff used to be a hotel, but having lost its garden to the sea it closed down a few years ago. The road on which it sits also now disappears of the edge of the cliff. There has been some effort made towards repairing the defences, but it remains to be seen how effective these will be.
